Stone Veneer or Faux Stone Panels?

When it comes to adding the timeless beauty of stone to your home, there are several options to consider. Two popular choices are manufactured stone veneer and faux stone panels. In this blog post, we'll compare manufactured stone veneer and faux stone panels, helping you decide which option is best for your next project.

What is manufactured stone veneer?

Manufactured stone veneer (MSV) is a man-made material designed to replicate the appearance of natural stone. It is made from a mixture of cement, aggregates, and iron oxides, which are molded and colored to mimic the texture and look of real stone. MSV is available in a wide range of styles and colors, making it a versatile choice for various applications, including interior and exterior walls, fireplaces, and more.

What are faux stone panels?

Faux stone panels, also known as polyurethane stone panels or artificial stone panels, are lightweight panels made from high-density polyurethane. These panels are molded from real stone to capture the natural texture and detail. They are then colored to replicate the look of stone. Faux stone panels are designed for easy installation, often featuring a built-in interlocking system.

Comparing manufactured stone veneer and faux stone panels

1. Aesthetic appeal: manufactured stone veneer offers a more authentic and varied appearance, closely resembling natural stone. Each piece is unique, providing a more realistic texture and color variation. Faux stone panels can mimic the appearance of stone, they may not achieve the same level of detail as MSV. Panels may have a more uniform look due to the nature of their production.

2. Durability: manufactured stone veneer is generally more durable and resistant to chipping, fading, and weathering. Suitable for both interior and exterior applications, including high-traffic areas. Faux stone panels, while durable, they may be more susceptible to damage from impact. They are also less resistant to extreme weather conditions, making them better suited for interior or sheltered exterior applications.

3. Installation: manufactured stone veneer installation is more involved, requiring mortar and a potential moisture barrier. While professional installation is recommended, skilled DIYers can undertake the project with proper preparation. Faux stone panels are designed for easy installation, often featuring interlocking edges. They can be attached directly to most surfaces using adhesive and screws, making them ideal for DIY projects.

4. Cost: manufactured stone veneer is typically less expensive than faux stone panels due to the materials and labor involved in production and installation. Faux stone panels are generally more expensive, however the ease of installation can save on labor expenses.

5. Applications: manufactured stone veneer is versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications, including exterior facades, interior accent walls, fireplaces, and outdoor kitchens. Faux stone panels are best suited for interior applications or areas with minimal exposure to harsh weather.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the main difference between manufactured stone veneer and faux stone panels?
The main difference lies in their materials and construction. Manufactured stone veneer is made from cement-based materials and aggregates, giving it the look, texture, and weight closer to natural stone. Faux stone panels are typically made from lightweight polyurethane and formed into large panels, which makes them easier to install but less authentic in appearance.

2. Is manufactured stone veneer better than faux stone panels for exterior use? Yes, manufactured stone veneer is generally better suited for exterior applications. It is more resistant to weather, UV exposure, and temperature fluctuations, making it ideal for outdoor walls, facades, fireplaces, and kitchens. Faux stone panels are best used indoors or in protected exterior areas where they are not exposed to harsh weather conditions.

3. Which option looks more like real stone? Manufactured stone veneer offers a more realistic stone appearance. Individual stones provide natural variation in size, color, and texture, closely mimicking real stone masonry. Faux stone panels can look convincing from a distance but often have a more uniform pattern when viewed up close.

4. Is manufactured stone veneer harder to install than faux stone panels? Manufactured stone veneer requires a more traditional installation process using mortar and, in some cases, a moisture barrier, which can make installation more involved. Faux stone panels are designed for fast, DIY-friendly installation using screws or adhesive. While faux panels are quicker to install, manufactured stone veneer delivers a more permanent, masonry-style finish.

5. Which is more cost-effective: manufactured stone veneer or faux stone panels? Manufactured stone veneer is often more cost-effective overall. While installation may require more labor, the material itself is typically less expensive than faux stone panels. Faux stone panels may have higher material costs, but their ease of installation can help reduce labor expenses, especially for DIY projects.

Hi Greg,

Thank you for your question and interest in our stone veneer.

The majority of our stone profiles are individual stone and they are made of Portland cement. The individual stones will vary in size, shape, and thickness. To achieve the desired natural stone finish as shown in our images it is up to the installer to arrange the individual stones in the correct pattern and install each stone one at a time. We call this out on our website in several places, but it can be missed. As stone veneer is made out of Portland cement, manufacturing it in sheets/panels is just not reasonable as the weight of the finished product would make it very difficult for the end user to install/work with, therefore the majority of manufactured stone veneer available in the market today will be individual stones.

If you are looking for a panel system, our ready stack profile is a mini panel stone product and is installed in sections at a time https://mountainviewstone.net/collections/ready-stack. Each panel measures 4” high but will vary in length (5.5”, 8.25”, 11”, 16.5”) and thickness (1.5”-2.5”). Each ready stack panel has multiple stones on each panel face. To achieve the desired finish as shown in our images it is up to the installer to arrange the panels in the correct pattern and install each panel one at a time.

Our pricing is available on our website. As our pricing can change it is best to view the price on each product page prior to placing your order.
