Can You Help with My Stone Veneer Measurements?
Share
We are happy to assist you in estimating the amount of stone veneer you need for your project. However, since we are not on-site, our figures are only rough estimates. It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure accurate measurements and order the correct amount of stone veneer for your project.
Why accurate measurements matter
Miscalculating your stone veneer order can be costly. If you underestimate, you may need to place an additional order, which can be expensive due to:
1. LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) shipping costs: ordering just one or two extra boxes of stone veneer can result in disproportionately high shipping fees due to the way LTL freight pricing works. Shipping costs are not calculated strictly by weight but also by freight class, dimensions, handling requirements, and minimum charges set by shipping carriers.
2. Minimum order requirements: some suppliers may have minimum order requirements, which means that if you only need a small quantity of additional product, it could result in higher costs. To minimize extra expenses, it's important to be aware of these minimum order policies and plan accordingly.
3. Potential delays: waiting for additional materials can significantly slow down your project timeline, especially if the materials are crucial for a specific stage of the work. When there's a delay in receiving items like stone veneer or other building materials, it can halt progress, leaving workers idle and pushing back the entire schedule. This can be particularly problematic in projects with tight deadlines, where every day counts. Not only does this impact the efficiency of the current phase, but it can also cause a ripple effect, delaying subsequent tasks that depend on the completion of the earlier ones.
We cannot measure from drawings or blueprints
While architectural drawings and takeoffs are helpful in planning, they often do not reflect real-world conditions such as window placement changes, framing adjustments, or other site-specific factors. For this reason, we cannot provide measurements based on blueprints or takeoffs. The best approach is to have you or your contractor take precise, on-site measurements before placing your order.
How to measure for stone veneer
To ensure accuracy, follow these steps:
1. Measure the square footage: multiply the height by the width of each wall or surface where stone will be installed.
2. Subtract openings: deduct areas where stone is not needed, such as windows and doors.
3. Factor in waste: we recommend adding 10% extra for waste, depending on the complexity of your installation.
4. Measure for corners separately: if your project has corners, measure the linear footage separately, as corner pieces are sold differently than flat pieces.
Add 10% for overage
In addition to waste, it’s essential to account for breakage and cuts during installation. We recommend ordering an extra 10% of material to cover:
1. Breakage during handling and transport: some pieces may arrive damaged despite careful packaging.
2. Cuts and adjustments: pieces may need to be trimmed to fit around obstacles, which can result in material loss.
3. Future repairs: having a small amount of extra stone can be useful in case of future damage or modifications.
